Distance: 0.75 miles (1.2 km)
Grade: Easy
Walk Leader: Mary Lauppe
Description:
Kick off the Festival with a 45 minute Mindfulness walk in the Dursley woods, with gentle instruction on Mindful walking. This will be a mostly silent experience, but there will be stops to share/discuss and ask questions.
The woods provide an enclosed environment conducive to the benefits of Forest Bathing, a clinically proven method of promoting mental and physical health. Breathing in the antimicrobial compounds released by trees, boosts the immune system. Added to this the experience of walking mindfully, stress is lowered, and a sense of community from doing this with a group lowers anxiety and depression.
Mary is a psychotherapist, and has led mindful walks in the past in America. She teaches mindfulness meditation in her work with clients, and lives in Dursley.
Wear walking shoes – even though it is an easy walk, there are stones and roots on the path in places. There is also one very short and steep uphill bit, otherwise it’s pretty flat.
Directions to the walk start point: From the top of Whiteway Hill turn right and take the road to the golf course. Go past the entrance to Breakheart Quarry and the road junction to Waterley Bottom, both on your left. The start of the walk is a little further along on the right hand side of the road by a metal barrier entrance onto the track. There is room to park a few cars there. If there is no room left please park at Breakheart Quarry and walk to the start point.
This walk is free, but the Festival relies on kind donations to ensure its future.
